Laser Cut Leather

twentythree twentyfour

I’ve been making lots of laser cut things and I’m learning a lot about laser-safe materials.

When cutting leather, always use veg-tanned leather. Any leather that is colored or nice and soft is likely chromium tanned. Sulfer dichromate releases poisonous sulfur gas when burned, so laser etching isn’t a great idea. I got my veg-tanned leather from Tandy Leather!

Laser settings were Speed 120 Power 30 for the etch and 40/80 for the cut. 5 mm thick leather.

I turned the pieces I cut into little magic wallets! Pretty easy with some cardstock backing, pretty fabric, some elastic cord, and E6000 glue.
