Homemade Mosaics

These cute little mosaic necklaces were made with leftover 5x5x3mm mosaic tiles (from Amazon, 1000pc multicolor for about $15). I also got some “trays” which are the gold things below. They were 25mm x 50mm which was perfect for fitting in the tiles. The last part of the puzzle is the glue – I used Weldbond to glue them down (which dries clear!) and had good results.

The initial impetus for this project was to make a memorable bridal gift for a friend, so I bought a bunch of scrap broken tile from a local tile store, broke them up a little more using a tile cutter (also from Amazon) and provided them to all the bridal shower attendees who glued down their pieces in whatever pattern they wanted.

Then, I took the piece back and lovingly grouted it (be careful! tiles with thick glaze are basically broken glass on the edges, don’t get cut!) to the final product below. I picked a white air-dry sanded grout, which made the whole piece look much lighter than before grouting. Something to keep in mind – using a gray grout would have made the colors pop a bit more.

The pendants were another station because only a few people could work on the mirror mosaic at a time – they glued down their mini tiles onto their pendants and I grouted those too since I was already grouting!

A note on prep: I bought some MDF from Lowe’s and asked them to cut it down to size. I also bought a square mirror from Michael’s and glued it down with weld bond. Once dry, I masked out the mirror with blue painters tape to protect it during gluing and grouting. Finally we screwed in some wall hooks into the back (reinforced with glue) and strung some wire through so they could hang it if they wanted. The blue tape was only removed in the very end – after the grout had dried.

Ultimately, the mirror needed to be sealed after the grout dried. I left this up to the happy couple, so I’m not sure what they ended up using. Without sealing, the grout was very sandy and would crumble off.
